Provence: The Colours

I have spent many summers in Provence with my family. Lounging around in the sun, eating, drinking Rose, and generally being very lazy! The light is so different, the inspiration is everywhere but the paint dries too fast!

I remember clearly the first time I saw the red soil in Provence. The penny finally dropped for me. I had not realised that Cezanne’s paintings were based on the true colours! I had always thought the colours were embellished and exaggerated but no - the earth is red!

Sometimes the sky looks lilac, the pines are vibrant lime green. The sea sparkles and I have often thought it looks as though someone has tipped a bucket of silver sequins into the water.

Everywhere I go I take so many photos on my phone! Then I am able to trawl through them and use them as a starting point for a painting.

I have painted boats in the bay of St Tropez and have produced some smaller versions for a lovely couple who live there and wanted something new to decorate their walls.
